These words appear across our range, and they aren't interchangeable. Here's precisely what each means at Saffron Alley, so you can choose with complete clarity.
Grass‑fed. The animal's diet is grass and forage rather than grain. Our Irish beef is exclusively grass‑fed — a leaner, more mineral, traditionally "beefy" flavour, and the diet welfare‑minded customers often seek. (Note: grain‑fed, like our 250‑day Angus, isn't lesser — it's a different, richer, more marbled profile; see [Choosing the right steak].)
Free‑range. The animals have genuine access to the outdoors to roam, rather than being kept permanently indoors. Our lamb is free‑range across open pasture.
Pasture‑raised. A step beyond free‑range: the animals live primarily on pasture, foraging as they naturally would. Our pasture‑raised Berkshire chickens are slower‑grown this way, which is exactly why they reward you with firmer meat and a richer flavour you can taste from the first bite.
Organic (certified). A regulated standard covering feed, living conditions, and the avoidance of routine chemicals and growth promoters, verified by certification. Our organic chickens are certified‑organic, free‑range birds from Wales.
Grain‑fed (for context). Grain in the diet, often for a defined finishing period — our Black Angus is grain‑fed ~250 days for deep, consistent marbling. Premium, just different from grass‑fed.

FAQs
- Is grass‑fed better than grain‑fed? Not better — different. Grass‑fed is leaner and more mineral; grain‑fed is richer and more marbled. Choose by taste and dish.
- Does free‑range mean organic? No — organic is a stricter, certified standard. An animal can be free‑range without being organic.
