Few questions matter more to our customers than how the animal was slaughtered, so we answer them completely and without spin.
Beef and lamb: no stunning. Our cattle and lambs are not stunned. Each animal is hand‑slaughtered by a Muslim slaughterman in accordance with Islamic requirements, under certification from the Bray Halal Centre (beef) and the Halal Food Authority (lamb).
Poultry: reversible stunning before hand‑slaughter. Our chicken suppliers use reversible stunning before halal slaughter. Reversible stunning temporarily renders the bird unconscious without causing death: the bird is fully alive at the point of hand‑slaughter by a Muslim, and were slaughter not to take place, it would regain consciousness. This method is accepted by many recognised Islamic scholars and halal certification bodies worldwide, who consider it permissible provided the animal is alive at slaughter and all other halal requirements are met. Our poultry is certified by HQC and the HFA.
Our position on the difference of opinion. We recognise there are differing scholarly opinions on stunning within the Muslim Ummah, and we don't believe it's our place to decide for you. We believe in being fully transparent about our practices so you can make an informed choice according to your own understanding, school of thought, and conscience. If only non‑stunned meat sits right with you, our entire beef and lamb range is prepared that way.
If you'd like further information about our suppliers, certifiers or standards, we'd be glad to help — just ask.
